Annunciation, 1475 1480

The origins of this masterpiece depicting the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary are uncertain. Originally attributed to a young Leonardo da Vinci upon its discovery in an Italian convent, it is now thought to be a collaboration between young Leonardo and the master under which he was then studying, Verrocchio. It is believed to have been painted sometime between 1472 and 1475. The archangel Gabriel is visiting Mary in a surreal setting to notify her that God has chosen her as the mother of the Messiah. Every part of the image from the wings of the angel to the distant landscape has been recreated with care and precision to do justice to the original.
